The Rise and Rise of Adele
Of the female singers to emerge in the 21 century, Adele holds the accolade of not only being the most popular female singer and songstress of the century so far, but she has also surpassed and made records that many artists can only dream of.
In December 2012, Adele was named Billboard artist of the year, and Adele 21,her second album was named album of the year. It is to date is the biggest selling album of the 21st century selling over 25 million copies worldwide.
The album in the US surpassed the #1 longest run set by The Beatles with 'Sgt Pepper' , and Pink Floyds 'The Wall' - no mean feat as The Beatles and Pink Floyd are arguably two of the top selling bands of all time.
In Australia Adele 21 was at the #1 spot for a consecutive 30 weeks, the second longest run #1 in the ARIA music history, as the first is still held by Dire Straits 'Brothers in Arms'. It also topped the album charts in 32 other countries....
Not bad beginnings for a girl with an extraordinary voice who began her professional musical journey by having a pal post some of her demos on My Space in 2006!
Skyfall, the theme song to the most successful James Bond movie of all time, won the Golden Globe for best soundtrack song, and has now been nominated for an Acadamy Award. The song, which Adele will be performing live at the 85th Academy awards, has sold 2 million worldwide and is the highest selling Bond theme of all time.
I promote the song heavily on my radio show, sharing with the listeners what will without doubt become a classic. The song remains one of the most requested songs since the movie premier in Australia.
Madonna has expressed a desire to collaborate with Adele. Celine Dion features her songs in her current Las Vegas shows, and Beyonce has citied Adele as a major influence in her recent recordings. Accolades from artists of this calibre truly reflect a class act.
Adele has said that her major influences have been Ella Fitzgerald, Roberta Flack, Etta James, and even the Spice Girls for their iconic Girl Power!
Adele is now taking time out from recording for a well deserved rest, as she has recently become a Mum.
Her opening speech upon accepting her Golden Globe was 'Oh my Gawd, I feel like Meryl Streep' ! Judging by her career to date she certainly will share the accolade of being one of the great artists.
